About Ed
My work has evolved - from a background in painting - into clay research and throwing wheel thrown forms on a traditional kick wheel using predominantly Cornish, French stoneware clays, Terracotta, and local clay blends.
I throw classic and functional forms in batches. Studio time is then spent making slips and glazes with natural materials and experimenting with methods of surface, design, colour, application, and firing methods. Emphasis is spent developing shapes that are expressive and personal whilst aiming for a timelessness, functionality, warmth of feeling and atmosphere.
I'm particularly inspired by pottery of the 19th century and early 20th century. Utilitarian pottery, slipware and studio pottery of Britain and Europe, as well as historical Japanese pottery, are continual sources of inspiration. The unique spirit and skill of these unknown artisans is something I aim to acknowledge and channel in my own pieces.
With this in mind, I hope to find ways to make work that stands the test of time. My interest in strong textural surfaces, traditional raw materials/ clay bodies and classic forms reflects this.
All work is ultimately functional and designed to be used and long lasting.
